My artistic roots came from my father, Bong Wai Chen, who was a master and teacher of Chinese Calligraphy and
Landscape Brush painting.
After graduating with a BA in Art from UC Berkeley in 1973, I studied Old Master Techniques with David Hardy, Founder of Atelier School of Classical Realism in Oakland.
After many years of studio figure paintings, I started seeing the human figure in many different ways. as in anatomical
interest (realistic elements), visual interest (abstract elements), psychological interest (feeling, imagination) and
metaphysical interest (thought, ideas).
In 1997, I met a plein aire painter, Barbara Reinertson (we are married now) who introduced me to outdoor painting and
wow, was it fun and exciting. I could feel and experience the fragrance of flowers,... the moodyness of the clouds of the sky,... the constant
flicker of sunlight on water.... and the changing of the angle of the sun's light. At no other time, was I, more in the moment. This was when creativity happens upon us, with only openness and acceptance.
ARTIST STATEMENT
When starting a painting, I'm looking for something that is visually and emotionally provocative. It may be the coloration of the ocean waters, the energy
and power of the currents, the elegant sillouette of a figure in front of the light, or the delicate glow of a rose pedal. Since, I paint from observations, it's important to observe the area for awhile, before I commit to a point of view. What is seen from my point of view is very important, because these objects will be the actors or vehicles of my expression of my ideas.
